A look back at Davie sports 50 years ago …
Davie boys golf was so good in 1975 that it routinely produced four scores under 80, like the meet at Corbin Hills when Eric Lawhon shot 74, Greg Benson 76 and Craig McCoy/Ronald Webb 79s.
The same was true at Twin Cedars, where Davie got a 72 from McCoy, 73 from Webb, 76 from Bobby Brownlow and 78 from Stanley Randall.
Davie boys tennis stomped North Rowan 8-1 behind singles victories from Ken Jaordan, Rick Maxey, Dickie Vogler, John Groce, Blaine Burton and Scott Haire.
In a selective shot golf tournament at Hickory Hill Country Club that attracted 68 participants, Hoyt Pope, Gordon Tomlinson, Jim Moore and Hubert Boger won by one shot with a 36-hole score of 134. The second-place team: Denny Creason, Marion Randall, Ken Sales and Bob Hall. The finest 18-hole round of the two-day tourney was 9-under 63 by the foursome of Craig Snead, Joe Mando, Brad Bullock and Hilary Arnold. That round was highlighted by an eagle chipped in on No. 16 by Mando.
Dollie Johnson slammed a home run in each game as Davie softball swept a doubleheader from West Rowan.
Davie baseball endured an excruciating 4-3 loss to South Rowan after carrying a 3-0 lead into the sixth. Larry Carter pitched a one-hit shutout for five innings. Jeff Barker and Dale Latham supplied the key hits during Davie’s surge to the 3-0 lead.
The Davie girls captured first place in the Western North Carolina Activities Association Play Day at North Rowan, which hosted 17 schools. Led by Phyllis Stevenson (first in broad jump, second in discus, third in shot put), Karen Carter (second in horseshoe pitching for third year in a row), Kathy Hutchens (third in softball throw), Vanessa Smith (tied for third in basketball free throws) and the 440-yard relay team that took third with Janice Hunter, Teresa Williams, Barbara Call and Stevenson, Davie eked out a 39 3/4-39 win over South Rowan. Davie softball went 4-0 on the day, closing with a 1-0 win over South. Paula Sechrest stole second and eventually scored the only run on a sac fly by Cathy Hanes.
Six War Eagles shot 77 or better at Twin Cedars. The star of the meet was Mark James, who fired a 70.
Davie softball went 10-4 and finished second in the North Piedmont Conference. Team members included Donna Howard, Debbie Scott, Wanda Beal, Hutchens, Smith, Carter, Angie Cornatzer, Hanes, Sechrest, Johnson, Cindy Lanier, Terri Sloan, Teresa Chappell, Hunter and Billie Ferebee. The team was coached by Aileen Steelman and assistant Nancy Miller.
North Iredell edged Davie baseball 2-1 as North’s Casey Van Hoy shoved a one-hitter to trump a two-hitter by Davie’s Andy Rutledge. In the top of the sixth, Latham broke up Van Hoy’s no-hit bid with a double that led to Davie’s only run. Latham scored to cut Davie’s deficit to one on a sac fly by Ron Bivins.
Even without a senior on the squad, Davie became the first NPC golf team to have six players shoot in the 70s, and the War Eagles wrapped up their regular-season title at Foxwood. McCoy was the medalist with a 70. Lawhon and Webb finished third and fifth, respectively, in the individual standings. Davie finished third in the WNCHSAA meet. Its top four scores there were Lawhon 75-76, Benson 76-78, Webb 76-84 and S. Randall 83-79.
Davie track fell short in its quest to win the NPC for the third straight year, but coach Burt Barger’s boys made up for it by claiming the North-South Bi-Conference meet for the third consecutive year. Robert Pulliam broke the bi-conference record in the 120 high hurdles (14:45) and also finished first in the 330 hurdles at 40.20. Barry McBride broke his own record in the two-mile run at 9:54.3 and also won the mile at 4:29.9. Other Davie winners: Reggie Lyons (2:01.4 in the 880); Kelly Brown, Gilmer Mason, Billy Etchinson and Carnell Jones (1:33.1 in the 880 relay); and Etchinson (tied for first in the 100).
Carter struck out 10 and Davie baseball pulled out a 4-2 win at South Iredell. Barker’s triple sparked a three-run fourth. That was followed by Carter’s RBI single, two walks and Kim Seaford scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
Davie track was trying to repeat as WNCHSAA champion, and the mission was accomplished at South Point. Pulliam (first in the 330 hurdles and 120 high hurdles) and McBride (first in the mile) were their usual amazing selves.
Carter (complete-game two-hitter) pitched another gem as Davie baseball beat West Iredell 6-2. Sid Short blasted his first home run of the season. Short had the only Davie hit in the final game, a 12-3 loss to East Rowan.
In a 16-18 baseball showdown at Rich Park, the Davie Red Sox slipped past the Davie Reds 5-4 in eight innings. Roger Speer and Ricky Stroud provided excellent pitching, and Ricky Dyson, Mark Jones and Andy Beck were the top sticks for the winners. The Sox overcame two-run homers by Barker and Ron Taylor.
