Things might have looked bleak on the surface – the Davie JV soccer team had lost three straight and five of six – but coach Collin Ferebee knew his girls were capable of a performance like the 6-2 beatdown of visiting East Forsyth on April 16.
“We’ve really come together as a team the past couple of games,” Ferebee said. “We had that bad spell – back-to-back against Reagan and West Forsyth – and I told them: ‘We have the back half of the season to improve if you want it, and your challenge is to improve on every score from the first half.’”
Kim Torres and Gabi Sandoval drove home two goals each as Davie built a 4-2 halftime lead and kept its foot on the gas in the second half. Piper Davis and Renna Welborn added one apiece as Davie improved to 4-6-1.
“Renna hit a confident and clean penalty kick to level it at 1-1,” he said.
Ferebee said Davis, Torres, Sandoval and Ella O’Toole were major contributors.
“Piper, Kim and Gabi ran like crazy to open up our attack to allow us to score six,” he said. “Ella played down with us in her first game back from injury as a ‘sent-to-the-minors-for-rehab’ type thing, and she absolutely rocked it out at center back for us. She was huge on that back line.”
Two days earlier in Pfafftown, Davie was overpowered 5-0 by Reagan. The outcome was understandable; the Raiders only have one loss on the season.
