Reynolds proved too much for visiting Davie in a showdown for a share of first place in the CPC on April 17, but the Davie boys lacrosse team responded with a hard-fought win over Reagan to remain alone in second.
The Demons and their tough-as-nails goalie halted Davie’s winning streak at eight with a 12-7 decision, but the War Eagles could take comfort in knowing this was the Demons’ closest CPC game of the year. They had outscored their previous seven league opponents 121-36, including a 16-4 rout of Davie in March.
Now the War Eagles hope history repeats itself should they get another crack at the Demons. Last year Reynolds beat Davie twice before failing to the War Eagles in the CPC Tournament semifinals.
Owen Blakely and Jack Pisciotta had three goals each, and Ty Carter had the other. Will Carter had three assists, while Henry Hines, Barrett Robertson and Pisciotta had one apiece.
“We have to learn from our turnovers,” coach Ross Neisler said. “We came out strong, but we played with a little lack of discipline, they had some lucky plays and took advantage of some of our mistakes. Their goalie was very strong and we played catch with their goalie. There were some learning lessons about taking care of the ball, but we learned that we can be aggressive against them and take their aggression. We never gave up.”
Davie 14, Reagan 11
Although the War Eagles trailed 9-8 at the end of the third quarter, they showed their mettle in the fourth and pulled out a road win on April 18.
“We pulled it off,” Neisler said. “We showed some mental fortitude. I let them fight through their own demons because we were playing out of position, out of control and we weren’t playing very disciplined. We didn’t play with a lot of poise, so I was letting them fight through it.”
T. Carter (three), Blakely (three), Jayce Bentley (two) and Hines (two) delivered multiple goals. Evan Helms, W. Carter, Pisciotta and Cas Moore had the other four. In the assist category, Pisciotta had three, Hines two, T. Carter two, Blakely two and W. Carter one.
“We have so many different weapons on offense,” Neisler said. “In the fourth quarter, at least three different people scored.”
Helms and Elijah Chaffin, a pair of gifted sophomores, came up big.
“Evan did a very good job of transitioning the ball in the fourth quarter, controlling it, settling it and getting to 50-50 balls,” Neisler said. “Elijah locked down a very good player who is going to play in college.”
Notes: Reynolds and Davie are 8-0 and 7-2 in the CPC, respectively. Reagan and West Forsyth are tied for third at 5-3. … Davie had a tougher time than it did on March 25, when it drilled Reagan 15-4. … In a road nonconference game on April 23, Davie got 13 points from Pisciotta (7 goals, 6 assists) and stomped South Iredell 24-0. The winless Vikings (0-13) have been outscored 225-10. … Hines had four goals as Davie improved to 14-2. Carson Pirk had 3, while Bentley, Chaffin, Helms and JD Cunningham had 2 each. Helms added 54 assists.
