The Mocksville Junior Legion baseball team’s first win over Davidson County II was not easy (5-4). Mocksville cruised in the second meeting, 7-1 on the road, thanks to the dynamic pitching of Nick Cannon.
A rising junior at Davie, Cannon gave up one unearned run in a complete game on June 22.
“He had nine or 10 strikeouts,” coach Blake Little said after Post 174 bounced back from an 11-1 loss to Kannapolis. “The only way they were getting on base were walks and we had an error or two. They had one or two hits. He’s a big kid and he’s really developed a fastball. He’s got more velocity and the offspeed to go with it. It’s been really nice to see that develop, too.”
Three guys who came down from the senior club did the heavy lifting on offense.
“We had a few guys come down from the senior team because we were shorthanded,” Little said. “The Johnson twins (Joseph and Jonus) and Brayden Carter were responsible for six of our seven runs. They propelled the offense because we had a lot of starters out.”
Mock 7, Stokes 3
One day later at home, another rising junior at Davie, Ian Patton, was equally impressive on the mound in the first meeting against Stokes County.
The lefthander pitched a three-hitter over six innings and only allowed one earned run. Mason Boger slammed the door by striking out two in a perfect seventh.
“Patton has gotten better and better as the season’s gone on,” Little said. “He was the workhorse for the Davie JV this year and I was excited to get him. He’s a lanky lefty and he’s got a fastball with some zip on it. He was hitting his spots and had the curveball working. His issue has been walks, but he’s one of those guys that finds a way to get out of jams, and he did that multiple times.”
Mocksville had four runs before Stokes got on the board, and it won going away. It made the most of five hits. Gabe McMurray, Jason Riddle and Wade Hefner all went 1 for 2, with Riddle and Hefner drawing two walks each. Colton Howard and Kolby Long were both 1-3.
“It feels like every time we get somebody on, we’re scoring,” he said.
Mock 10, Foothills 6
The defining moment in a home win over Foothills Central on June 25 was the fifth, when Mocksville broke open a tight game with six runs.
Hefner and McMurray sandwiched singles around a two-run double by Long. Three errors, a walk and a hit batsman were mixed in as Mocksville roared to a 10-3 advantage.
Mocksville’s other three hits in the game came from Ben Bost (double), Riddle and Tay Settecassi. Dylan Garwood (two walks, HBP) reached base three times as Mocksville won for the sixth time in seven games.
The winning pitcher was Howard, who struck out seven in 5.1 innings. Boger got the last five outs.
Randolph 6, Mock 2
Mocksville’s hot streak was cooled off by Randolph County Red on June 26, when the visitors built a 6-0 lead through six and a half innings.
Mocksville defeated Randolph 6-3 a week earlier, but Randolph settled the score by outhitting Mocksville 10-6.
Bost went 1-2 with two walks. McMurray (1-4), Hefner (1-4), Settecassi (1-3, walk), Long (1-3, walk) and Mason Canter (1-4) had the other base knocks. Riddle had two walks.
Mocksville entered the final week of the season with a 6-7 record.
