Willy appreciated the shelter.
So did some other goats.
They can thank Davie County’s newest Eagle Scout, Oliver Mears. He oversaw construction of an enclosure/barn at Davie County Animal Services as his community project part of attaining Boy Scouting’s highest honor.
With help from parents Todd and Khristen Mears, grandfather Bruce Langdon, fellow Scouts and more, the shelter was completed in December, and has already hosted three goats – and a single goat, Willy.
Oliver reached out to Lisa Nielsen, the Davie Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Director, to see about needs at the county’s animal shelter off Eaton Road in Mocksville.
“There was no question that a bran for livestock was our highest priority need,” Lisa said. “We have had to care for several horses, donkeys, emus and goats over the years. Adding a barn for them to have shelter was something we really needed.”
Some of the animals at the shelter were abused, others got lost and are waiting for owners to claim them.
“The cruelty cases we had to hold for several months, and this barn will significantly improve our quality of care,” she said. “I’d like to thank Oliver for building us this wonderful barn. He and his fellow Scouts worked in hot weather last summer and cold rain last fall and never complained.”
Oliver is a home-schooled recent high school graduate.
The project came together through efforts of others, Lisa said. A Mocksville man who loved animals had left funds for a shelter in his will. Oliver and his crew got further discounts on materials from Yadkin Lumber, Mocksville Concrete and Caudell Lumber.
