Two people died and another was injured Tuesday, June 3 when a vintage aircraft crashed at Sugar Valley Airport near Mocksville.
The N.C. Highway Patrol secured the scene soon after the 11:43 a.m. crash, and firefighters and rescue personnel from the Smith Grove Fire Department and Davie Rescue put out a fire in the wreckage.
The FAA and N.C. Highway Patrol reported that the pilot and a passenger died in the crash, and that a second passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. They did not release the names.
The plan was a Stinson 108 Voyager, a four-passenger, single-engine aircraft manufactures in 1946. It was registered to Meredith K. Hall and Tahereh S. Hall of Kernersville.
A representative from the National Transportation Safety Board reported that the plane was performing a “go around,” a maneuver in which the plane prepares to land but instead takes off back into the air.
The Sugar Valley runway is 36 feet wide, with wooded areas 60 feet away.
A preliminary report from the NTSB is expected within 30 days.
Sugar Valley is a private airport on Gilbert Road, off Pinebrook Drive.
