Callie Wisecarver didn’t stand a chance.
From birth, she was destined to “graduate” from Davie County High School with her mother, Lynn.
It happened last Saturday.
Callie graduated as a member of the Class of 2025. Lynn retired after 26 years teaching at Davie High. She’s also a 1983 graduate of the school.
“I had no choice,” Callie said.
Not that it would have mattered. To say that the mother and daughter are close is an understatement. They really are.
“I think she was in kindergarten when we realized she would be graduating about the same time I would retire,” Lynn said. “We started talking about it then.”
The two became even closer in 2021, when Lynn’s husband and Callie’s father, Brian, died from COVID complications. “It’s just been the two of us at the house,” Lynn said. “But he always has a front-row seat.”
Not that they stay at the house that much.
They love going to concerts together, and Lynn credits Callie and her friends with keeping her up-to-date with music and styles of current teens, one of the things Lynn says she will miss the most. They’ve traveled extensively, and have another trip to Europe planned over the summer.
“Working with teens has helped to keep me young,” Lynn said.
Callie said that having her mother so close has been a blessing, although she wondered once or twice why her mother had shown up in her classroom.
“It’s been kind of helpful,” Callie said. “If I need anything or forgot something, she can bring it to me. But it can be annoying … she will randomly just pop up.”
Their concert exploits are epic, usually close to the stage in the pit: Callie had her photo made with Nicole Kidman; at the Concert for Carolinas, Lynn was called out by Keith Urban for her years as a teacher and Callie told him she had met his wife the previous week, and 40,000 or so people roared their approval; Callie had her photo made with Megan Moroney on her 18th birthday.
Callie is headed to UNC Wilmington, where she plans to study journalism and communications, with a dream of some day working in the music industry. “I’m just ready to get away, period, and start new experiences,” Callie said. “I will miss my family and my friends here.”
Her mother won’t be that far away, and the road between Mocksville and Wilmington will be well traveled. A friend with a home on nearby Oak Island helps.
At Davie High, Callie was editor of the school’s online newspaper, The Weekly Talon, served on the yearbook staff which Lynn is the teacher, threw the shot put for the track team and was on the golf team.
Lynn plans to spend at least part of her retirement writing, something she has always enjoyed. It was a professor at Lenoir-Rhyne who initially suggested she become and English teacher.
“There’s something about the creative process that makes you feel alive,” Lynn said. “I want to get a job pouring wine – because you’re around happy people – and I want to write. I’ve always loved to read, and I’ve kept a journal.”
