The long jump competition at the Coastal Athletic Association outdoor track & field championships was something to see. Two Davie County athletes who jump at the University of UNC Wilmington went at it and captured the gold and silver medals.
The meet was held last week on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Junior Bryson Robinson, a 2022 Davie graduate, earned the gold medal for the second year in a row, but senior teammate Ivan Poag, a 2021 Davie grad, gave Robinson a heckuva run before settling for second.
Poag was sixth – at 22-10 – after three attempts, but he leapfrogged Robinson and a guy from Monmouth with a career-best 23-6 on his fourth attempt.
Poag was sitting in first, but his buddy was in vintage form on his fourth attempt as Robinson retook the lead at 23-9.5. Then Robinson solidified his victory with a 24-8.5 on his final jump, which punched his ticket to the NCAA East first round.
“What a day for Bryson,” UNCW coach Jeff Klaves said. “Ten times out of 10, I’ll take this guy to be representing us. He hit his best jump of the season on his sixth and final attempt. Excited that his team was able to share it with him.”
The college bests (as of May 4, 2025) for the 6-0, 165-pound Robinson are: 10.65 in the 100 meters, 6-4.75 in the high jump, 25-10.75 in the long jump and 43-0.5 in the triple jump. The 10.65 in the 100 came on April 18, when Robinson recorded the ninth-fastest time in Seahawks history.
Poag is a 6-4, 190-pounder from Mocksville. His college bests (as of May 4): 11.18 in the 100, 54.94 in the 400, 5:25.48 in the 1500 and 22.87 in the 110 hurdles.
