Lanna Robinson of Davie’s varsity soccer team reached a fantastic achievement when she scored during Davie’s 4-0 home win over Glenn on May 5.
It was goal No. 20 for the CPC’s second-leading scorer. Robinson’s only the fifth different War Eagle to notch 20 goals in a season, and it’s the most goals in 11 years.
The 20-goal club includes: Allison Howell 28 in 2003, Howell 25 in 2001, Brooke Hedgspeth 25 in 2014, Brittany Walker 21 in 2001, Melissa Agrillo 21 in 1996, Howell 20 in 2002.
“It was a big moment,” coach Corbin Kopetzky said. “Lanna knew before the game that she was one away, but she’s a team player and she’s focussed on winning.”
Makenna McGowan converted two goals and Lydia Postell had one as Davie blanked Glenn (3-16) by the same score as the first meeting.
Reynolds 3, Davie 1
Robinson continued to build on her special season with a game-tying goal in the first half, but the visiting Demons took advantage of a penalty kick and held off Davie in the final regular-season game on May 7.
It was 1-1 at halftime after Postell’s team-high eighth assist of the season, but the Demons broke the tie when a girl got free in the middle of the field and they broke Davie’s back with the PK.
“A PK was given to them,” Kopetzky said. “In that scenario, it’s hard to tell what the outcome could have been because of the advantage going to the shooter instead of the keeper.”
Everyone knew it could go either way after the teams tied 1-1 on April 9. Kopetzky had few complaints.
“The ref gave a PK,” he said. “We battled. I don’t think the score shows how close the game actually was.”
Notes: Even though the loss prevented the War Eagles from tying for third, a tie for fourth marked their best CPC finish in 20 years (tie for third in 2005). The standings: West Forsyth 13-1, East Forsyth 11-2-1, Mt. Tabor 8-4-2, Reynolds/Davie 7-5-2, Reagan 4-9-1, Glenn 2-12, Parkland 0-14. … While Reynolds improved to 10-7-3 overall, Davie slipped to 11-5-3. … Davie played its third full game without freshman defender Gracyn Coleman, who suffered a season-ending left knee injury in the opening seconds against West Forsyth on April 28. Unfortunately, the Colemans know this pain all too well. Gracyn’s senior brother, receiver Braddock, tore up his knee in the first half of the 2024 football opener at Mooresville and missed virtually the entire season. At least Gracyn has three more years at Davie. “Thirty-eight seconds into the game,” Kopetzky said. “She has surgery (this) week. She was big for us. She was a difference-maker in the back in some of the tight games. She complemented well in the back. Her being back there allowed us to open up some other things. Sometimes we played a three-man back. Even though she’s a freshman, I really trusted her.”
