The Davie varsity soccer team’s games against Reagan and East Forsyth saw the usual CPC grind. A tie and a narrow loss reminded the War Eagles that you must tread lightly in almost every league game.
The 0-0 overtime tie at Reagan on April 14 felt like a net loss for the War Eagles, who rocked the Raiders 4-1 in March. Sixth-place Reagan (2-9-2 overall) came in with 6 straight losses, and this marked its 6th straight game without a goal.
“We didn’t play great,” coach Corbin Kopetzky said. “They showed up and got some momentum going and it ended up being a really competitive game. But it shouldn’t have been as competitive as it. We took 23 shots. We created opportunities. They had very few shots; they had less than 10 shots the whole game.”
Davie had to settle for its third tie of the season despite huge efforts from Jaden Sink and Mallie Wall.
“Jaden and Mallie played really well,” Kopetzky said. “They made a lot of big plays. We moved Jaden up to midfield and started moving the ball a little better. She was all over the place. Mallie won almost every ball that came her way. Reagan started playing very heavy away from those two once they got rolling.”
East 3, Davie 2
East was presumably pretty psyched to see the Davie bus arrive on April 16. The War Eagles shaved East 2-1 in the first meeting, but East hasn’t lost since, the win over Davie extending its winning streak to seven.
Although East scored the first three goals, Davie did not go down without a fight. Makenna McGowan and Sarah Andrade scored as the War Eagles waged their fourth one-goal battle of the season. (They are 2-2 in those games.) Lydia Postell assisted both goals.
Yes, the tie/loss put a damper on a season that has seen Davie (9-3-3 overall) post the most victories in 17 years, but the season is far from over. It’s an utter logjam among the top five teams in the standings. Entering the week, West Forsyth was 7-0, East Forsyth 6-1, Mt. Tabor 5-3-1, Davie 5-3-2 and Reynolds 3-2-2.
“All of them come down to the wire,” Kopetzky said. “The playoffs are on the horizon. If we can battle, we’ve got a chance to host in the first round. That’s something the girls have looked forward to trying to accomplish. We’ll see if we can get there.”
