Davie’s varsity soccer team lost 4-2 to North Davidson on March 24. When Davie trailed North 2-0 just 11 minutes into the rematch at War Eagle Stadium on April 25, you were probably thinking: “Haven’t I seen this before?”
Instead of falling off a cliff on Senior Night, the War Eagles rallied for a 3-2 victory. They played splendidly over the final 55 minutes and gave seven seniors – Katelyn Hernandez, Melani Anderson, Emily Muchukot, Allie Carter, Ana Almazon, Claire Devereaux and Mary Tellup – a memorable moment in their final home games.
“It was an awesome game and comeback on our Senior Night,” coach Kerstin Steinour said. “I am so proud of the girls for not getting down about the slow start and being behind two goals. They all played so well and never gave up. It was a well-deserved win.”
North slipped to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the Central Piedmont Conference. Davie improved to 8-10-2, 3-8.
What a contrast the end was to the beginning, when North bolted to the 2-0 lead.
“I think the excitement of Senior Night had the girls sidetracked,” Steinour said. “We never let down, and in fact their goals made the girls focus and play harder.”
Faith Bokeno and Annie Kinder made the tables turn. They scored at 25 and 39 minutes, respectively, to force a 2-2 tie at the half.
The first 30 minutes of the second half were frustrating for Davie because it was dominating but the score did not change. But with eight minutes remaining, Kinder nailed down the win with another clutch goal. She was an unexpected hero after scoring two goals in the first 15 games.
“We came out in the second half ready to win,” Steinour said. “We dominated the entire half and had six shots for every one of theirs. We just couldn’t get it in the goal (until Kinder came through).”
