Cooleemee Code Officer Proposes Strict Animal Control Ordinances

COOLEEMEE – Board members here are reviewing a proposed list of recommended ordinances to address animal problems plaguing the town.
Code Enforcement Officer George Madeja presented the ordinances to the board in an hour-long portion of this month’s meeting.
“What I have proposed is animal control and animal welfare ordinances,” Madeja said. “The purpose is to ensure peace and tranquility for residents and welfare for animals owned by residents.”
The 30 plus pages of animal ordinances address issues such as impounding nuisance and dangerous animals, odors, noise, and dogs running at large.
Madeja suggested mandatory spay/neuter of free roaming cats.
“If an animal is owned by somebody that person should be responsible if that animal is disturbing the peace and tranquility of another resident,” Madeja said.
