Dorothy Hyacinth (Shepherd) Harvey

Dorothy Hyacinth (Shepherd) Harvey of Staunton, Va., died at home on Feb. 24, 2017, surrounded by family.
She was born in Graham, daughter of Claude Wellons Shepherd and Sally Molisa Catherine Dimont Shepherd; stepdaughter of Elizabeth Howard Shepherd of Cooleemee. She studied nursing at Atlanta’s Grady Hospital, then joined the U.S. Navy as a nurse, serving in Charleston, S.C., and Lakehurst, N.J. during World War II. In Lakehurst, she met and married Cmdr. Robert W. Harvey, also serving in the Navy as a blimp pilot. In the early 1950s, the family settled in northern Virginia. After her husband’s retirement, they lived in Kilmarnock, Va. She moved to Staunton in 1989 after the death of her husband. Her smile and subtle sense of humor will be remembered by relatives and friends across Virginia and the country.
Survivors: 3 children, Barbara A. Bacon, of Alexandria, Va., Claude W. (Bill) Harvey of Jasper, Ga., and David R. Harvey of Churchville, Va.; grandchildren, Bonnie, David, Melissa, Christopher, Melanie, Josh, Sean, and Shenan; and 11 great-grandmothers; sisters, Mary Shepherd of Staunton and Roberta Shepherd Stutts of Winston-Salem.
She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Lee Harvey.
