A West Virginia man was shot while sleeping in a motel room Sunday morning, and a traveling companion is charged with attempted murder.

The victim, Paul Ridgway of Webster Springs, was listed in stable condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Monday.

Charged with the crime was Nicholas Harris, 33, also of Webster Springs. He is being held in lieu of a $175,000 bond.

Davie Sheriff’s Chief J.D. Hartman said the suspect was arrested without incident in the lobby of the Hampton Inn in Bermuda Run, and declined to talk to officers about the incident.

The victim said he was asleep when he was shot. The two, along with another person, were traveling together and were in the area for drag racing activities, Hartman said.

The N.C. Highway Patrol assisted in taking the suspect into custody.
