Sandy was born on Feb. 8, 1949 in Stanly County to the late Charles Lentz Hinson and Mary Emma Hinson Russell.Sandy realized her love for helping others at a young age. While in high school, she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Davie County Hospital where she experienced firsthand the positive impact she could have on patients.
Following her graduation from Davie High in 1967, Sandy enrolled at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, starting her 44-year career as a registered nurse. She dedicated her service to Forsyth Memorial Hospital (1970-1987) and Piedmont Hematology-Oncology Associates (1987-2014) and touched the lives of countless patients and their families.
Sandy was introduced to David Mendenhall by her sister, Billie, and her brother-in-law, Stewart. They married in 1970 and shortly thereafter welcomed sons Derrick (1972) and Ryan (1976). When she wasn’t caring for her patients or hosting family at their home on Bermen Drive, she devoted her time to Canaan United Methodist Church.
