When an officer of the law tells you to stop running – you should stop running.
When an officer of the law tells you to stop or his K9 officer will be released – you should stop running.
And when that K9 apprehends you – give up, don’t fight back.
A Jonesville man found out the hard way last week that K9 officers mean business.
Marty Raymond Williams, 38, was charged June 12 with driving with license revoked, DWI, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, assault on a K9 law enforcement officer, and resisting a public officer.
According to Davie County Sheriff’s Chief J.D. Hartman, around 1:30 a.m. a traffic checkpoint was being conducted on US 158.
“Officers noticed a vehicle approaching that stopped, backed up, and turned into a driveway,” Hartman said. An officer went to investigate, turned on the blue lights on his patrol car, and followed the vehicle down the driveway to a residence.
“The suspect, Mr. Williams, got out of the vehicle and fled,” Hartman said. Williams was told by officers to stop or a K9 would be released, but he failed to comply. “The K9 was released and apprehended Mr. Williams, who began fighting the dog and officers,” Hartman said.
The K9 was kicked and hit by Williams multiple times, but is back on duty after  release from a veterinarian.
