It’s not often that county commissioners receive an ovation from residents at their regular meetings – but it happened Monday evening.
After a public hearing, commissioners adopted a new animal ordinance that puts more teeth into the rules – giving law enforcement and animal control officers more authority to get dangerous and potentially dangerous out of neighborhoods.
The unanimous vote was greeted with applause.
The residents thanked the commissioners and County Attorney Ed Vogler and Animal Control Director Sheriff’s Lt. Bob DeWitt, who wrote the new rules.
Many of those who spoke had been to the commissioners a couple of months ago, complaining about persistent problems with aggressive dogs.
“It’s really great that you all listened,” said Danette Covey. “Thank you.”
“I would like to thank you for the steps you have taken,” said Don Routh, a bicycle rider.
Andy Abbott also rides bicycles on Davie roads. “It’s hard to go out when you’re scared.”
“A law like this is needed in this county,” said Duane Barnett, veterinarian. “It’s more of a people problem … but this will help.”
