Things looked grim for South Davie’s wrestling team even before the first of two matches began on Nov. 22. The Tigers were missing nearly half their lineup for various reasons, and beating Corriher-Lipe and Mooresville was simply too much to ask on this day.
“We were missing seven starters,” coach Russell Hilton said. “I had two sick, two out of town, one hurt and one had ringworm – a lot of different things.”
South lost 66-41 to Corriher-Lipe. It got two forfeits and pins from Aidan Szewczyk (106), Ivan Bustamante (113), Laz Smith (132), David Hicks (170) and Brandon Paster (195).
The Tigers fell to 1-3 when they lost 69-30 to Mooresville. They received a forfeit and got pins from Szewczyk, Isaiah Leonard (152), D. Hicks and Maddox Creason (182).
While South expected two pins from Szewczyk, it saw a stellar effort from D. Hicks in his debut. Both of the seventh grader’s pins were in the first period. The third 2-0 Tiger was Jakob Alexander, who received two forfeits. “He’s pretty tough,” Hilton said of Hicks.
