The Davie jayvee boys basketball team’s offense finally clicked as Davie outlasted visiting Lexington in a 77-72 shootout last week.
The War Eagles had lost four of five, and their shooting percentage had been dreadful. The first quarter wasn’t pleasant as Davie fell behind 21-12.
The War Eagles were razor sharp from the second quarter on. After scoring 59 points – total – in the previous two games, they produced the most points in six games. Coach Bill Walwik would have probably been steaming had Davie not rallied to victory. It drubbed Lexington 66-38 in the first meeting.
“The first quarter looked like the same ol’, same ol’ for a while,” Walwik said after Davie improved to 4-6.
Davie found its rhythm and never let up, using an 18-12 second-quarter run to pull within 33-30 at halftime. Davie outscored Lexington 23-17 in the third and 24-22 in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets did not get closer than three in the fourth.
“We stopped thinking,” Walwik said. “We were going through some paralysis by analysis the last four games. We started playing ball and stopped thinking about it.”
After averaging 7.4 points over five games, Chavin Peebles atoned for that with 26 points. It was his fourth 20-point output and boosted his team-best average to 14.3.
Caleb Dyer enjoyed his finest hour in two jayvee seasons, scoring 21 points despite a scoreless first quarter. After not scoring more than seven in a game this year, he drained six of Davie’s 12 3-pointers. That’s outstanding marksmanship.
“He came alive and we really needed it,” Walwik said. “He was just catching and shooting. He wasn’t catching, analyzing and shooting. He was just taking the shots that were there in the rhythm of the offense.”
