Mr. Gilbert “Bert” Leo Brandon of Advance died Thursday, May 15, 2014 due to more than a year of declining health. He died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. 

Mr. Brandon was born in Forsyth County on Oct. 18, 1934 to William Franklin and Lucinda Lawrence Brandon. He spent his youth and much of his adult life in Clemmons. He graduated from Clemmons High School. He left the family farm, and joined the armed services from 1955-1957, but returned to his family and community to earn his livelihood and establish himself. He reminisced about childhood memories he shared with his large family which included nine brothers and five sisters. He learned to work hard, but developed a keen sense of humor. His ability to stir laughter and endearment knew no bounds. He would go to great lengths to pull a joke or prank, but always with the friendliest and warmest intentions. He encouraged, mentored, and consoled anyone who suffered. He retired from AT&T after 34 years and worked at Black Box Communications formerly Todd Communications for 21 years. He loved gardening, traveling, and spending time with his extended family, close friends, and neighbors. He was involved in community service through membership in the Advance Masonic Lodge 710, Davie Civitan Club, and churches. He was a devout Christian and a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church but was attending Advance First Baptist Church. He dedicated his efforts to the better good of home, community and world. 

Preceding him in death were his parents, 3 sisters, and 6 brothers. 

Surviving: his wife of more than 50 years, Willa Burchette Brandon; daughter, Benita Lynn Finney (Jeff); son, Johnny Brian Brandon (Bridgette); 5 grandchildren, Austin, Amber, Bradon, Brandee, and Brian; 2 sisters, Betty Alexander (Herbert) and Linda Massengill (Don); 3 brothers, Bill Brandon (Yvonne), Larry Brandon (Carolyn), and Wayne Brandon (Gwenda); nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Revs. Max Furr and Rodney Hellard officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family received friends Friday at the funeral home.
