A woman and her child were struck by a vehicle while crossing a Mocksville street Friday evening, leaving a man whose wife died after being struck by a vehicle in April, wondering why something hasn’t been done.
On Friday, Mya Leann Wilhelm, 30, of Abbey Lane, Mocksville, was crossing Salisbury Street holding her 3-year-old daughter when they were struck by a vehicle driven by Courtney Leigh Richmond, 27, of Linda Lane, Mocksville, reported Mocksville police.
Mother and daughter were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment. The child suffered bruises to the head, and was released the next day. The mother remained in the hospital as of Monday morning, being treated for a broken leg and hip, said Police Chief Pat Reagan.
Richmond was charged with failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The vehicle was traveling at an estimated 20 mph when it struck the pedestrians, knocking them some 35 feet.
The incident happened just prior to the annual bed races, and the streets were busy with traffic, pedestrians and emergency personnel, who were on the scene within seconds, Reagan said.
“Fortunately, we were all already near the scene. We had immediate response (from police, sheriff’s officers, EMS and the fire department),” he said. “Thanks to everybody involved.”
The crosswalk, like others in Mocksville, was not re-painted when parking spaces were this summer while the town waits on the N.C. Department of Transportation to install new crosswalks on Main Street. Friday’s incident was on Salisbury Street.
David Plagemann, who was severely injured in the April incident in which his wife died, wonders why.
“There has been no attention given to the crosswalk markings on the square since April 2019, very possibly even before that date,” he wrote in a letter to the editor of the Enterprise Record. “As the surviving victim of the April 2019 accident, I find it deplorable that nothing has been done. There have now been two death/injury accidents within the poorly marked crosswalks. How many more will there be before something is done?”
