A 17-year-old died instantly when the car she was driving ran off the road, skidded and overturned off U.S. Highway 64 west Sunday afternoon.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. E.C. Roten, Adrianna Barber, of Jericho Church Road, was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee west near Bethel Church Road when the vehicle ran off the road to the right around 1:35 p.m. July 7. Roten said it appeared she overcorrected, went into a skid and collided with another vehicle before running off the road and overturning.

The other vehicle, which was traveling east, was a 2008 Toyota 4Runner. The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Roten said it appeared Barber was restrained by a seat belt. Airbags were deployed in both vehicles, and both drivers were entrapped in their vehicles. After impact, both vehicles ended up in a shallow creek.

Roten said the accident occurred in a straight stretch of the highway at the bottom of a hill. He did not know what Barber’s destination was. The accident is still being investigated.

The Davie County Rescue Squad and EMS, Mocksville and Cornatzer Fire Departments, Davie Sheriff’s officers and the highway patrol all responded.

Roten said the accident has been especially difficult as so many who responded know Barber’s parents, Lee and Dreama.

“This is a tragic event, and any fatal collision is difficult but it’s always more difficult when the victims are young, local, and when we are familiar with their families. We give our condolences to the Barber family, and we are committed to finding as many answers as we can for all those involved,” Roten said.
