U.S flags that are past their prime should be disposed of in a “dignified way,” according to the U.S. Flag Code.
Davie County, in cooperation with the National Association of Counties and the National Flag Foundation, has installed a flag retirement box at the Davie Veterans Service Office, 161 Poplar St., Suite 123, Mocksville (Brock building, back side).
Flags should be folded respectfully before placing in the box.
“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” according to the code.
Members of Cooleemee Mocksville VFW Post 1119 agreed to dispose of the flags properly.
“We are honored to offer this drop-off site which we believe provides convenience while respecting our national symbol,” said Meagan Tomlin, Davie Veterans Service Officer. “The county is unified in helping enable our citizens to respect our great nation while disposing of old or worn out flags.”
