Mocksville Town Board members and firefighters got a sneak peek at the fire department’s new truck last week.

At a cost of more than $560,000, it has taken two years for the truck to be delivered. It was still due for lettering last week, and firefighters will train on the new engine for several weeks before it is put into service, said Fire Chief Frank Carter.

It replaces a 20-year-old engine that had traveled more than 100,000 miles.

The 2018 Rosenbauer will be safer for firefighters, featuring rollover protection and side air bags. It can transport up to five firefighters.

Carter said the department had been having maintenance issues with the old truck, and the National Fire Protection Association recommends that no truck older than 20 years be in service. Using older equipment could hurt fire ratings for insurance.

The new truck can carry 1,200 feet of water supply lines and 2,000 feet of hard lines.

Mocksville has 32 firefighters on the roster, including seven part-time paid personnel.
