Right before the clock struck midnight on the 2010 baseball season, Davie charged from outer space and reached the final 16 in the state playoffs by upsetting two teams on the road. It was a gratifying finish to a season that saw Davie stumble in the Central Piedmont Conference.
Coach Mike Herndon’s 13th Davie team hopes to pick up where it left off when the 2011 season begins the first week of March.
The season looks extremely promising. Three seniors (Jacob Barber, Carson Herndon and Alex Newman) have signed Division-I scholarships, and a fourth (Joe Watson) received a football-baseball scholarship from Division II Catawba. Another player, junior Ryan Foster, has received considerable attention from college recruiters. Yet another, Connor Bodenhamer, is a serious college prospect.
“We have a lot of experience,” Herndon said. “We made a good run at the end of last year. We lost Zach Long and Tyler Jordan, who were two very good players, but we swing it pretty good from top to bottom. We’ve got some power and some speed. I like the way this team is coming together, and I like the way they’re working.”
