Mr. Ellis Winford Hayes, 81, of Deadmon Road, Mocksville, died Friday, July 18, 2025 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1943 in Marlboro County, S.C. to the late John Ellis and Susan Geneva Taylor Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a member of Blaise Baptist Church in Mocksville and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a door gunner and crew chief on a helicopter during Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. He was the recipient of several medals with valor. Mr. Hayes enjoyed doing yard work, fishing, charity work, and traveling across the country in his camper with his wife and dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by: a daughter, LuAnn Niebauer; a brother, William D. Hayes; and 2 sisters, Mary Sue Gray and Jean Hyatt.
Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Kathy Hayes of the home; 2 children, Janet Duncan (Steve) of Mocksville, and Norman Hayes (Iris) of Bishopville, S.C.; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Lloyd Hayes of Marlboro County, S.C.; and several other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at his home, 297 Deadmon Road, Mocksville. Military honors will be conducted.
