Our Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, a day called “Independence Day; the 13 American colonies formally separated from Great Britain. The day was first celebrated on July 4, 1777 in Philadelphia with bell ringing, fireworks and 13-gun salutes. Independence Day or the Fourth of July became a U.S. federal holiday in 1870; however, federal employees were unpaid until 1941 when it became a paid holiday. Here’s wishing everyone a safe and blessed Independence Day.

Our community extends its sympathy to the family of James Monroe “Jim” Stroud; who died at home Saturday, June 21, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Davie County in 1932 to Guy and Pauline Godbey Stroud and was reared on NC 901 near Stroud Mill Road. A veteran of the US Army, he owned a dairy and later beef cattle farm; he also worked at the Statesville Auto Auction. He and wife Imogene settled on his family farm and reared their four children. A service celebrating his life was held Wednesday of last week at Society Baptist, where he was a longtime member; he was laid to rest in the church cemetery.
