The legacy of Brack Bailey, a native of Davie County, continues to make an impact, this time through the pages of his memoir, “Growing Up in Advance.”
A graduate of Shady Grove High School and an accomplished athlete, he was known not only for his achievements on the baseball field, but for his deep love for his hometown.
After a professional baseball career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds organizations, and a successful career in banking and business, Brack returned to Davie County.
Inspired by research into his ancestry at the “Forks of the Yadkin,” he authored “Growing Up in Advance,” a heartfelt tribute to his roots, family and the enduring values of rural life in North Carolina.
“This book exemplifies Brack’s lifelong commitment to his community,” said Wesley Sharpe, president & CEO of the Davie Community Foundation. “Through this book, his legacy of generosity, storytelling, and pride in Davie County will continue to inspire and uplift others.”
Bailey’s life was filled with accolades – from being Minor League Player of the Year twice and a Sally League All-Star – to his inductions into the Davie County High School Hall of Fame, Pfeiffer College Hall of Fame, and the Winston-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame.
He continued playing softball into his 80s, winning state titles with senior teams, and traveled to more than 80 countries in his lifetime.
Still, he often said the most beautiful view in the world was of the Yadkin River from the back deck of his home in Davie County.
Growing Up in Advance is available now, with all proceeds directed to the Braxton R. & Edith Marshburn Bailey Fund at the Davie Community Foundation. Bailey created the fund in memory of his parents and to help support the community hr loved so deeply.
