Something special took root at Pinebrook Elementary this past school year.
And it all started with a dusty old box of forgotten supplies.
In October, Becky Hancock began exploring creative ways to support the school’s fundraising efforts without directly soliciting money from families. While rummaging through the PTO cabinet, she stumbled upon a collection of vintage Box Tops materials – stickers, keychains and promotional goodies from years past.
That small discovery sparked a big idea.
The Box Tops for Education program has since evolved into a completely digital platform. Gone are the days of clipping cardboard squares; now, families and community members simply scan their grocery receipts through the Box Tops app, or connect their Walmart accounts for automatic credit. Each eligible item earns cash back for the school of their choice – no extra cost.
Pinebrook’s initial goal was to raise $500 through the program. “Thanks to enthusiastic participation, we not only reached it but surpassed our stretch goal of $1,000.
“Along the way, we’ve made it fun for students by introducing creative, non-monetary incentives—like awarding ‘Cape Cash’ to the top-earning class, and passing around a coveted Box Tops Championship Belt. The excitement has been contagious, and even the Box Tops Facebook coordinators group has recognized the school’s efforts with positive feedback and encouragement.”
This initiative has been a team effort, with support from fellow parent Whitney Allen and fourth grade teacher Laura Carver. Together, they have been able to make fundraising fun, engaging, and impactful – without adding financial strain on families.
“We’d love to spread the word so that other schools can get involved, and so community members who want to support local education can jump in as well. Every school has its own referral code; for Pinebrook Elementary, it’s F36H17WL. New users who sign up with this code will earn the school 25 Box Tops, or $2.50. During promotional months, that reward can even double.
“It’s a simple, powerful way to give back—and the impact adds up fast.”
