A look back at Davie sports 30 years ago …
There was no way to predict the crazy things that happened in back-to-back Davie baseball games during the 1995 season.
Against North Davidson, the War Eagles were no-hit for five innings but somehow won 4-3. Davie no-hit Mt. Tabor for five innings but wound up losing 10-0.
North Davidson starter Chad James had a no-hitter going and the Black Knights were ahead 3-0. But Davie came out of nowhere in the sixth inning. David Daye and Eric Shook reached on errors before Tim Gilbreath legged out an infield hit. A walk to Chevis Cuthrell loaded the bases and a walk to Neil Cornatzer forced in a run. Matt Sain’s sac fly tied the score at 3 and Philip Rogers doubled home the game-winning run.
Against Tabor, Jansen Keene of Davie was dealing a no-hitter for five innings, but the Davie wheels came off in the seventh, when five Tabor hits were blended with four Davie errors, resulting in nine runs for the Spartans.
Davie junior Joe Harpe led all golfers with a 37 at Hickory Hill Country Club. Sean Boyd shot 38 and Chris Bigenho 42. Justin Taylor, Will Hege and Josh Ward had 45s.
Davie boys tennis played seven straight 5-4 matches. Losing six of them was extremely frustrating, but the War Eagles vented in an 8-1 beatdown of South Rowan. The singles winners were Scott Van Hoy, George Sulecki, Tee Bahnson, Scott Leverenz, Kevin Hinshaw and Russell Senger.
West Forsyth softball held a 4-2 lead over Davie, but the War Eagles stormed back to win 9-5. Jenny Stewart roped a pair of doubles, Janis Barney tripled and knocked in three runs, and Amanda Sigmon turned in two hits as Davie began its comeback in the fourth.
South Davie baseball was 0-3 and North Davie was 4-1 when the rivals met under the lights at Rich Park. North was supposed to roll but South had other ideas, upsetting the Wildcats 5-2. South coach Grimes Parker sent unheralded Thadd Johnson to the hill and the seventh grader responded with a stunning two-hitter that included clutch grabs in the outfield by David Nail, Paul Sparks and Lanny Collett. Johnson only walked one. South made it happen despite only managing four hits, including two off the bat of Nail.
“I can’t say enough about Thadd,” Parker said. “This is a tremendous boost. We weren’t supposed to win this game.”
Christina Cassidy and Kristy Armstrong had amazing achievements in a Davie track meet. The former became the top 4-A discus thrower in the state when she unloaded a 113-2. The latter triple jumped a school-record 33-6.5.
Boyd, a fabulous sophomore, wrapped up CPC Player of the Year when Davie’s golf team competed in the 18-hole league tournament at Hillcrest. Another super soph, Chris Tomel, fired a 5-under 67 to take medalist honors.
Davie tennis knocked off vaunted Reynolds for the first time ever and locked up its first berth to the state dual team playoffs. Senger and Leverenz triumphed in singles as third-place Davie upset the No. 1 Demons. Davie swept doubles to win 6-3. Davie’s doubles teams were Van Hoy/Hinshaw, Sulecki/Senger and Leverenz/Bahnson.
For the Davie girls track in the CPC championship meet, sophomore Megan Hendrix was sensational, winning the high jump and 100 hurdles and making all-conference in four events, including second-place finishes on two relay teams. It was Hendrix’s second CPC title in the high jump. Angela Fowler and Cassidy won titles in the shot put and discus, respectively. The lone star for the Davie boys was James Clement, who captured the long jump at 21-4.
Davie girls soccer had a moral victory in a 1-0 overtime loss to powerful West Forsyth. Katie Desch, Tammy Cope, Bull Coulston, Allison Ward, Brandi Boger and Jill Everhardt played lights-out defense.
“That’s the first time in our history that we’ve tied them in regulation,” coach Pete Gustafson said.
The Davie softball team’s 5-4 loss to West Forsyth was difficult to stomach. The War Eagles led 4-1 before falling apart.
“I couldn’t believe we lost,” coach Darrell Steele said. “I wanted to cry.”
Elizabeth Greene held up her end of the bargain with three hits. At the end of the day, Emily Hill was leading Davie in average (.543) and RBIs (17). Jonette Williard was hitting .520, Amanda Sigmon .455 and Stewart .452.
Davie tennis exited in the first round of the state duals, but there was no shame in a 7-2 loss at Lumberton. The only Davie singles winner was Senger at No. 5.
“Lumberton has three of the top 50 in the state in the USTA rankings,” coach Carol Cozart said.
In the Midwest Regional at Mt. Tabor, Cassidy and Clement were their typical dominant selves, winning the discus at 116-1.5 and the long jump at 21-8.5, respectively. Sophomore Stephanie Ijames qualified for the state by finishing fourth in the long jump.
“She seems to rise to the occasion,” coach Tim Shuford said of Cassidy.
In the first major golf tournament of the season for the Carolinas PGA, Jeffrey Lankford came out scorching. He claimed first at 6-under 210 and walked away with a $3,000 paycheck.
Davie baseball was 5-18 when it visited 17-5 East Forsyth. It was a mismatch on paper, but the War Eagles jumped on Cornatzer’s back and pulled off a 7-6 shocker. Down 5-3, Davie loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Cornatzer came through big time, launching a grand slam to cap a 4-for-4 day. Gilbreath had two hits.
Davie softball trailed powerhouse North Davidson 9-4 in the CPC Tournament final, but the War Eagles came tantalizingly close to the upset before falling 10-9. North held on to run its record to 21-0.
“They can hold their heads up,” Steele said.
Sigmon sparked the rally with a two-run homer. Davie, which trailed 6-0 after the first inning, scored three in the sixth to tie the game at 9. Janis Barney and Jennifer Bell had singles before Leann Spillman reached on an error. After Krissi Pack singled, freshman Melinda Richie ripped a game-tying hit to left.
“Richie has been hitting well all year, and that’s why I moved her up from JV,” Steele said.
Cassidy and Clement concluded their sterling seasons in the 4-A track meet in Chapel Hill. Both finished fourth, with Cassidy throwing the discus 111 and Clement long jumping 22-2.
