If you have kids or grandkids who are looking for summer fun, try 4-H .
“We have a variety of opportunities, and something to interest each child. From cooking classes to archery, 4-H offers a variety of fun and educational activities available for children starting at age 5,” said Abby Williams, Davie 4H Cooperative Extension agent.
• 4-H Summer Fun workshops are held on weekdays and begin June 17 with Cloverbud STEAM. Children ages 5 to 8 will explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math through hands-on activities to get kids excited about these fields.
• Youth Gardening (6/24-6/26) gets children out in nature to learn about insects and plant growth and development. Youth enjoy hands-on gardening experience and spending time in nature.
• Speaking of nature, there will be day trips to Pilot (6/18), Stone (6/27), and Grandfather (8/6) mountains. 4-Hers will spend the day hiking in the mountains, and participants will build navigation skills using maps and compasses. Youth will have the opportunity to see mountainous wildlife and spend time outdoors.
• Tom Cowden Shooting Sports Range will host archery (7/17 & 7/24), rifle (6/19) and shotgun (6/26 & 7/10) classes. Basic Rifle gives kids the opportunity to practice rifle skills and target shooting in a safe and controlled environment. In shotgun classes, youth will practice hitting moving targets and learn safe handling of shotguns. Hunting Skills (8/1) will teach kids how to hunt safely and identify types of wildlife. Archery will cover the basics of handling and shooting bows and arrows.
• Cloverbud Cooking (7/8-7/9) gets the little ones into the kitchen to learn basic cooking and food safety. Using their newfound kitchen skills, kids will enjoy their creations for lunch.
• Cloverbud Gardening (7/16-7/17) takes the kids outside to explore gardens. Kids will craft, learn to identify plants, and learn about plant uses.
• STEM Camp (7/15-7/17) will be held at the Rockingham County Center of N.C Cooperative Extension for three days. At this camp, science and engineering come together as kids build machines and learn more about how technology works.
• Life Skills Camp (7/28-7/30) will teach youth practical skills, such as cooking, sewing, basic finance, using tools, and safety. These skills will improve a child’s self-confidence in their everyday lives.
