Students earn music competition awards

The North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs is part of the National Federation of Music Clubs of America.
The state chapter hosts 13 Junior Festival music events across the state each year as part of the national music festival program
Winners of state festivals continued to the state finals which were held on the campus of UNCG. Three local students brought home honors for the Wake Forest District which includes students from Winston-Salem, Advance and Clemmons.
This was the second year a state level scholarship has been offered in the event of American Patriotic/Folk Songs Piano Solo. This is one of 20 scholarships offered on an annual basis for students in NC. Scholarships are available in piano, a variety of string instruments and voice.
• Sean Lane won the local Wake Forest event (with the top score of the day, a 100) and then traveled to the state finals with his two winning selections: “Shenandoah” and “America, the Beautiful.” Sean won the state title and a scholarship iand was invited to perform at the NCFMC winner’s recital in Statesville. He is the son of John and Jackie Lane of Advance.
Sean also went on to win the state title for the Peggy Robinson Matthews Hymns Class III Award. This is Sean’s third consecutive win in the hymn playing event on the district and the state levels. His winning music included: “To God be the Glory” and “The Power of Your Love” written by Darlene Zchech of Australian Hillsongs Worship. He attends Wesley Chapel Methodist Church where he is the Sunday morning pianist. Sean is an upcoming graduate of Davie High School and will be attending UNC Chapel Hill in the fall.
• Katelynn Beadle was the Wake Forest District winner in Piano Solo and in Hymns Class V. In her competition at the UNCG state finals she placed as first runner up for the John and Jonsey Queen Hymns V Playing award. Her selections for her placement in the UNCG Hymns event included: “Come, Thou Almighty King” and “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.”
Katelynn is the daughter of David and Jeanette Beadle of Clemmons. She is a junior with duel enrollment at Forsyth Tech and is homeschooled. On occasion, she plays the piano and organ for her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
• Olivia Rareshide is the winner of the NC state title for the Peggy Robinson Matthews Hymn Playing Class IV event for 2025. She won this event at the Wake Forest district festival as well as the Piano Solo Event in Moderately Difficult Level III. Her 2nd consecutive win at the NCFMC State Finals for the hymn event included: “Jehovah is Your Name” and “Crown Him with May Crowns.”
She is the daughter of Steve and Melissa Rareshide of Advance. Olivia is a rising sophomore at Davie High School.
“The above listed winners represents just a tiny example of the awards, scholarships and opportunities offered by NFMC across the United States,” said local teacher, Teresia Queen. “On an annual basis they award over three-quarters of a million dollars in scholarships. They have grown into one of the world’s largest music organizations since its founding in 1898. The organization provides opportunities for musical study, performance and music appreciation to more than 200,000 members nationwide in its 6,500 music-related clubs and organizations.
“The organization is dedicated to finding and fostering young musical talent and sponsor nationwide festivals with more than 117,000 participants. The mission is to advance and develop American music and musicians. They are a non-profit, philanthropic and educational organization dedicated to music education and the promotion of the creative and performing arts across America,” Queen said.
“Congratulations to our local winners as part of the nation-wide festival program recognizing excellence in music by the NFMC.”
