A team of students from William Ellis Middle School took second place in a recent Math 1 contest at Appalachian State University.
Students enrolled in Math 1 at middle and high schools in northwest North Carolina competed at the annual event.
Team members were Aaron Clodfelter, Nirat Patel, Ian Rareshide, and Lily Tronsen.
Individually, Clodfelter, Patel, and Rareshide placed in the top 12, with Tronsen close behind.
The students were coached by William Ellis math teacher Steve Rareshide.
“The four kids on the team were a delight to coach and were willing to put in many hours of hard work in preparation for this event,” said Rareshide. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group to work with.”
The annual Math 1 contests are sponsored by several universities throughout the state and the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics, designed to stimulate interest in math among middle and high school students through challenging tests. Each region sends its top students to the state level competition.
