Mother’s Day Tribute
We treasure all our mothers, living and deceased. Those in attendance at churches Sunday were recognized. One of the oldest in attendance in the community was 89-year-old Shirley Prather Lewis, who attends Clarksbury Methodist.
We honor four living or native resident mothers: Frances June Evans Beeson, Marjorie Carol Millsaps Cartner, Bobbie Jo Cartner Sees, and Hazel McDaniel Dyson Smoot.
• Everette and Lucy Safriet Evans of Old Mocksville Road welcomed daughter Frances June on Feb. 22, 1933 at the home of Lucy’s parents on Ridge Road. She attended Society Baptist, graduated from Harmony High in 1951, and later graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in Walkertown, where she met husband Kelly Beeson. They settled on her parents’ farm and reared daughters Lisa and Jennifer. With Kelly’s death in 1986 and the recent deaths of her daughters, Frances continues to live in her home with granddaughter Autumn.
• Mack and Maggie Wyatt Millsaps of Davie welcomed daughter Marjorie Carol “Margie” on March 26, 1933. She attended Harmony High through the 10th grade and transferred to Cool Spring High School, where she graduated in 1951. A “Mrs.” in her senior year, Margie and husband James Hugh “Jim” Cartner settled on Old Mockville Road and reared their three daughters and son. Margie’s Jim died in 1994, but she remains an active member of Clarksbury Methodist and lives in her home on Old Mocksville Road. She enjoys senior activities and events and volunteers at Matthew 25 three days each week.
• Ray and Nellie Jones Cartner welcomed daughter Bobbie Jo, the fourth of their nine children, on June 13, 1932, in Iredell. She attended Clarksbury Methodist and graduated from Harmony High in 1951. She first married J.D. Doby, the father of her children Janeen and “Sarge.” While working in government contracting for AT&T/Western Electric in 1980, she met and later married co-woker John Sees of Burlington. The couple built a home John designed on Yadkin Road in Davie. After John’s death last October at the age of 100, she continues to enjoy living there and caring for her flowers and plants.
• Wilbur and Willie Pearl Rumple McDaniel of Ridge Road welcomed the birth of their first child, daughter Hazel on April 13, 1935. She attended Salem Methodist and graduated from Cool Spring High in 1952. In her youth she and sister Doris played the guitar and sang in area churches. Hazel married Henry Dyson in December 1951; the couple settled in Davie and reared children Terry, Lynn, and Steve. Henry joined Hazel and Doris in their singing. The musical talent spread to Terry and Steve, who later joined their mother Hazel in singing gospel music. After Henry’s death in 1972, Hazel married Cedric Smoot in 1977. With the loving care of her children, she has remained in her home after Cedric’s death in 2002.
Here’s hoping you enjoyed this flashback of four senior ladies from County Line, and here’s hoping all mothers had a great Mother’s Day.
