One man is dead and a murder suspect in custody after an attack near Cooleemee Wednesday night, March 5.
Charged with murder is Zacharia Shade Shrewsbury, 25, of Fork-Bixby Road, Advance. He was taken into custody without privilege of bond. He was also served with two warrants for a probation violation.
The victim – Mark Anthony Lewis, 53, of Yadkinville Road, Mocksville – was dead on the scene, reported Davie Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brian Jacobs.
Sheriff J.D. Hartman reported that deputies were called to the area about 7:42 p.m., where they found the victim laying in grass beside a driveway on Clark Road. He was dead when they arrived. Shrewsbury was beside the body, covered in blood, Hartman said.
Jacobs said a witness called 911, and said the suspect was hitting the victim with a crowbar. A bloody knife was also found nearby. Jacobs said investigators haven’t determined the cause of the attack; according to the witness, the suspect just started hitting the victim. Jacobs said that one of the men may have been staying at a residence on Clark Road.
Both of the men were likely under the influence of illegal narcotics, Jacobs said.
