Nine female residents at a Mocksville senior living facility were either photographed in various stages of nudity or were sexually assaulted.
And a former employee and another man have been arrested by the Davie County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies first went to Mocksville Senior Living on Hospital Street on Dec. 13, when employees reported the suspect had sent them a disturbing video in a chat group, said Sheriff J.D. Hartman.
That video showed Cindy Gale James Rice, 41, of NC 801 S., Mocksville, inappropriately touching a patient’s breast. Rice was taken into custody and charged with second degree forcible sexual offense, and held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
Then detectives obtained a search warrant for Rice’s phone, which revealed a larger conspiracy.
Numerous images of female patients were found on her phone: fully nude taking showers and partially nude using the restroom. They also found that Rice had been sharing these photos, with the other suspect asking or directing what types of photographs she should take to send to him, Hartman said.
“Detectives met with and were assisted by management from Mocksville Senior Living multiple times to identify victims and victim family contacts,” he said. “In total, nine victims were identified from the images.”
Rice faced additional charges: 7 counts of secret peeping, six counts of felony secret peeping, and three more counts of second degree forcible sexual offense. She was held without bond because of the previous charge, pending a Feb. 13 first-appearance hearing in Davie District Court.
Ronnie McCoy, 40, also of NC 801 S., Mocksville, was charged with eight counts of accessory before the fact for his participation in these activities. He is being held without privilege of bond pending a Feb. 20 first-appearance hearing.
The sheriff provided some details about what the charges mean:
• second-degree forcible sexual offense is when a person engages in a sexual act on another person by force and against the will of the other person, or who has a mental disability or who is incapacitated or physically helpless, and the person performing the act knows or should reasonably know that the other person has a mental disability or is mentally incapacitated;
• misdemeanor secret peeping is any person who secretly or surreptitiously peeps underneath or through the clothing being worn by another person, using a mirror or other device, for the purpose of viewing the body of, or the undergarments worn by that other person without their consent and is a Class 1 misdemeanor;
• felony secret peeping is secretly peeping into any room and using any device to create a photographic image of another person in that room for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire, a class F felony.
All victims shown in the photographs have been identified, but the case is still under investigation, Hartman said.
