Mocksville Garden Club

This summer, the Mocksville Garden Club celebrated its 30th anniversary.

In 1994, the club was started with a donation of $500 from the Davie Chamber of Commerce and the help of 30 charter members. It was agreed that the club would be open to all men and women who loved flowers and gardens, were interested in protecting and preserving the environment, and wanted to help beautify the community.

Two of the club’s early members are still active:  Margaret Jo Brock and Kathleen Cartner.

From 1994-2000, the club held community projects, along with planting flowers in the boxes downtown. Funds were raised by publishing a cookbook, selling Christmas greenery, and plant sales.

In 2000, the club voted to take the savings and open a CD at a local bank with the intention that this money was to be used for a scholarship fund. A scholarship committee was established and the club gave a student a scholarship that year and continues to this day: 24 scholarships to deserving Davie students to this day.

Club members continue to help beautify the town and raie money for the scholarship. They help local businesses and care facilities that need a donation for landscaping.

At the 30th snniversary party, club members and guests enjoyed a program, food, a look back to 1994 with the old scrapbooks, yearbooks, and speakers. There were two scholarship winners, this year’s winner, Grayson Haynes, and a previous winner Bailey Marie Dyson. These young folks talked about their hopes and dreams and thanked the Mocksville Garden Club for their generosity.
