On Wednesday, a Cooleemee Elementary bus driver discovered a toy plastic BB gun in a student’s backpack as the students boarded the bus for the early release day. Immediate action was taken, and the toy gun was removed. There was no danger to the school or any students as the backpack remained in an assigned location during the day.
“The 7-year-old who brought the toy plastic BB gun did not make any threats and had no BBs,” said superintendent, Jeff Wallace. “However, following policy, we are working with the School Resource Officer and the Davie County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident.
“Student safety is our first priority, and Davie County Schools takes incidents like these very seriously, regardless of the type of weapon or if someone personally considers it a weapon or not. We always encourage parents to talk to their children about items that should not be taken to school.”
If parents or students ever have concerns about safety or items that should not be on campus, please report immediately, he said.
