An alert resident led to the arrest of a Greensboro man for breaking into multiple vehicles in Advance.

That resident called at 10:06 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, stating that a man was breaking into vehicles in the Redland Road/Lavender Farm Trail area. They even gave a description of the suspect’s truck, a white Dodge Ram with a bed cover.

Davie Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived four minutes later, and initially were unable to locate the truck.

Then more reports started coming in of vehicle break-ins in the area, with tools, weapons and money reported as stolen.

At 11:28 p.m., deputies located the truck being driven on Redland Road, and attempted a stop.

“The driver failed to stop … sped off driving recklessly, almost hitting a deputy’s vehicle,” said Davie Sheriff J.D. Hartman. “A brief chase ensued, which ended when the driver lost control of his vehicle and wrecked on US 158.”

Wyman Dwayne Kearns, 53, was taken into custody after a brief foot chase. A large number of believed to be stolen items were found in the vehicle.

Kearns was charged with: felony fleeing to alude arrest in a vehicle, felony possession of a stolen firearm, felony possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless driving, operating a vehicle with a fictitious tag, having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, resisting an officer, injury to property, multiple counts of breaking into a vehicle, larceny of a firearm, and larceny.

He was taken into custody in lieu of a $50,000 bond. He was on parole for being a habitual felon and has a long record of breaking into vehicles.

Hartman said that more charges are likely.
