The Davie Silver Spirits Senior Games basketball team came home from the national tournament in Pittsburg, Pa. undefeated.
The Spirits have represented Davie County Senior Games for 30 years in tournaments around the state and nation. T
They came out as winners against the NOVA (Northern Virginia) United Classics, Michigan Spirits, and Connecticut High Fives.
The three-day tournament began on Tuesday, July 11 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and ended on Thursday, July 13 with a huge win in a nail-biting game against the Michigan Spirits. The final score was 32-26.
They were awarded the gold medal at the 2023 National Senior Games for the Ladies 80-84 Basketball Team.
The Silver Spirits are comprised of the following: Alice Barnette, Sue Allen, Vickie Frye, Charlotte Miller, Lois Green, and this year, they picked up two players from Tennessee to fill out the roster. The coach is Vanessa Carter.
“If you ever get a chance to see them play, it’s an inspiration to all,” said Carrie Miller, Davie Senior Services. “They are the epitome of aging with purpose, and show that no matter your age, you can still participate in team sports.”
The Spirits will play a scrimmage against the Orange County Sprots in early October and will follow with competing in the N.C. State Senior Games Finals Oct. 27-29 in Greenville.
The Spirits weren’t the only competitors from Davie in the national games.
Shawn and Crystal Robinson competed in the archery competition, shooting over 200 arrows July 8-9.
John Bullins represented Davie County as he participated in three days of pickleball tournaments. The first day he participated in Mixed Doubles with his partner, Rosie. They went 1-2.
The second day, Bullins participated in Men’s Doubles with his partner, TC, where they finished 7th overall in their age category. T
The final day was Men’s Singles where Bullins placed 7th.
“Each of these participants faced huge competition and made Davie County proud,” Miller said. “To be eligible to participate in National Senior Games, one must place first at the local level followed by placing at the state level.”
