Mr. Lawrence Ray Whitaker, 75, of Garden Valley Road, Statesville, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 at his home.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1946 in Davie County to the late Arthur and Margaret Lucille Mayhew Whitaker.
Lawrence was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during Vietnam. He was a member of Cornatzer United Methodist Church in Mocksville where he had served on the Board of Trustees. He loved his church family very much. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 505 for many years as Assistant Scoutmaster and helped many achieve Eagle Scout. He enjoyed old time country music and listening to George Jones and Willie Nelson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 siblings, Ralph Whitaker, Earl Whitaker, Jessie Ruth Whitaker Mabe and MacArthur Whitaker.
Survivors: his wife of 38 years, June Smith Whitaker; children, Dennis Ray Whitaker (Tammy) of Ada, Okla., Shane Young (Amy) of Mocksville, Tracy Young Glass (Derek) of Greensboro, Lt. Charlie Dillon Smith (Julie) of Quantico, Va. and Kayla Smith Rogers (Dillon) of Midland; 3 grandchildren, Derek Whitaker (Emily), Miranda Whitaker Williams (Christopher) and Margaret Elise Smith; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jay Whitaker, Jack Whitaker, Jerry Whitaker, Robert Whitaker, Barbara Ann Schneeloch and Shelby Deal; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, James Kluttz.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19 at Cornatzer United Methodist Church, with Rev. Shane Young officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
