Mr. James Edward Bates, 84, of Colonial Lane, died Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He was born in Madison County, Ind. on Jan. 28, 1935, to the late Julian Simon and Bernice Bridenthal Bates. Mr. Bates enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating and traveling, having visited each of the 50 states. He was a loving grandfather who enjoyed his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Donald Bates, Robert Bates, Richard Bates and Michael Collins.

Survivors: his daughter, Shannon Henry (Bruce) of Mocksville;  her mother, Virginia Bates of Mocksville; grandchildren, James Henry (Carina), Samantha Kramer (Jason) all of Mocksville and Curtis Henry of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren, Connor Henry, Annabelle Kramer and Charlotte Kramer; a sister, Sue Ann Smits of High Point; a brother, Kenneth Collins (DeAnna) of California; and several nieces and nephews.
