George Millard Courtney Jr., 69, of Advance, died on June 24, 2019 at his home while under hospice care.

He was born March 14, 1950 in Fayetteville, Ark., a son to the late George M. Courtney Sr. and Glera Gertrude Burt. He raduated from Needles High School with the class of 1969 and earned an associate’s degree in the military. He married Jana Louise Ward.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Walter Courtney.

He served in the U.S. Army for 24 years. He was an MP, achieved the rank of E7 1st Sergeant and retired in 1992. He honorably served in the Vietnam conflict in 1968 and 1969.  During his military service, he received his CIB badge, was a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart and also received the Bronze Star and Silver Star for valor. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors: his wife of 11 years, Jana Louise Ward Courtney; sons, George M. Courtney III of Pfafftown, and Anthony William Courtney of Mocksville; stepsons, Freddie and Tommy Martin of Tara Hill; stepdaughter, Melanie Martin of Advanc; brother, Edward M. Courtney Sr. (Connie) of California; sisters, Laura R. Canter (Calvin) and Sallie M. Strong (Johnny), all of Mocksville; grandson, Steve Michael Courtney; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Davie Funeral Service Chapel in Mocksville. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 28 at 2 p.m. at the Davie Chapel, with Pastor Donnie Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Rose Cemetery.
