Towns eye merged ABC boards

Mocksville town board members unanimously agreed last month to negotiate with the Town of Cooleemee ABC Board to open an ABC Store in Mocksville.

Mocksville residents overwhelmingly (71%) voted to allow an ABC Store in 2016.

The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments studied the issue for the town, and recommended the merger with Cooleemee, at least for the first three to five years.

“With growing residential and employment populations and high volumes of traffic, the Town of Mocksville could support its own ABC Store,” the council reported. “A new store would not pose a great threat to the Bermuda Run store, but would likely decrease the sales of the Cooleemee store, as many of its customers come from the Mocksville area.”

The report said a merged ABC board should produce higher profits than two competing boards.

The study also recommended that the town rent space for the first three to five years to build gross sales before making a permanent investment on land and infrastructure.

No time table was given as to when a Mocksville store will open.
