Trash truck overturns; injuries minor

Part of N.C. 801 in western Rowan County remains shut down after a garbage truck overturned this morning.
Donald Morrison, whose son owns Donnie Morrison Garbage Service, was the driving the truck around 10:15 a.m. when it drifted off the shoulder. He tried to correct and crossed the center line, losing control. The truck flipped onto its passenger side.
Morrison, 70, and a passenger in the truck, Chris Gwyn, were trapped inside for about five minutes until passing drivers helped them get out.
Morrison and Gwyn had just left the Rowan County landfill on Campbell Road after dumping a load of garbage and were headed home.
Both men sustained minor injuries and declined further treatment after being checked out by medical responders.
Authorities are awaiting a towing company that can turn the trash truck upright and pull it away.
