Roy R. Leazer Sr. and Daniel Haddock, both members of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 of Salisbury, recently attended the annual Pilgrimage Day/POW-MIA Remembrance Event held at The Central Children’s Home in Oxford recently.
In 1941, Pilgrimage Day was set aside by the Ladies Auxiliary of Division B, Dept. of N.C. to raise funds for the Children’s Home. The theme was “Give a Dime to Train a Mind.”
Several Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units throughout the state of North Carolina also participated in the event, which raised about $19,000.
J.C. Price Post 107 and the Auxiliary received third place certificates for their fundraising efforts.
Leazer, who spearheads the Legion’s project, has been a member of Central Children’s Home Pilgrimage Day Event for nearly 50 years and has also been an advocate for the Central Children’s Home. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Central Children’s Home for more than 21 years.
He is a retired employee of the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. He was elected Legionnaire of the Year for the Department of the American Legion in 2004 and has received many awards and plaques for his community work with veterans over the past 50 years.
He has served on the Rowan County Veterans Council Honor Guard for 40 years and received more than 15,000 hours during this time.
Post Legionnaires and Auxiliary members have donated monies throughout the last 50 years since 1960 to this worthwhile endeavor at the Central Children’s Home at Oxford.
