Lind Shermer gives to Christmas Happiness in honor of 50 years of Girl Scouts and to her late daughter

Nearly 50 years ago, Lind Shermer, was instrumental in starting a Girl Scout Troop at her church — First Baptist. Throughout the years, Shermer and the other women of the church taught young girls to explore the world around them, attended countless trips and created many memories.
Shermer and her husband, Gordon, made a donation to the Christmas Happiness Fund in honor of all the girls who participated in scouts throughout the years. The couple also gave in memory of their daughter Debbie, Sarah Fowler Anderson, the daughter of family friends who died in September, and in honor of Cindy Fink, a family friend.
Christmas Happiness contributions are collected at the Salisbury Post. The donations are listed in the paper each day. The Salvation Army of Rowan County distributes those contributions to area families in need. Families receive a voucher to buy Christmas presents for each child who qualifies.
“I’ve had some very special girls. My girls liked to travel,” Shermer said.
The girls took trips to Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Charleston and Savannah.
“I’ve been blessed to be associated with those girls,” she said.
Shermer said she gave to the Christmas Happiness Fund because the girls were always doing something for everyone else.
“You can’t take it with you and you might as well give to something that can be used wisely,” she said.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
