The Reagan boys basketball team proved there’s more than two heavyweights in the Central Piedmont Conference.
Mt. Tabor and Davie were the supposed powers before the league race began, but Reagan got everybody’s attention during an 81-78 overtime upset of visiting Davie last week.
Three days before hosting Davie, the Raiders showed they’re a force in a three-point loss to frontrunner Tabor.
The overtime verdict before a boisterous crowd was a wrenching loss for the War Eagles, who were their own worst enemy for much of the game. On the other side, Reagan viewed it as a game to remember.
“We don’t have the talented, college recruit-type players, but we’ve got some good high-school players that play hard and play well together,” Reagan coach Howard West said after the second-place Raiders improved to 13-4, 3-1.
The third-place War Eagles were scratching their heads after suffering back-to-back losses a few days after moving up a notch to fifth in the 4-A poll by NCPreps.com. They fell to 12-3 and 1-2 in the CPC. They’re not far from 15-0; the losses have been by a combined nine points.
While Reagan brought its A game, the War Eagles were sloppy against the full-court press and were undermined by poor free-throw shooting.
